How to write a quote that wins the job
The difference between a quote that gets a yes and one that gets ignored usually isn't the price. Here's how to write quotes that win more work.

You did a good site visit, you know the job, and you sent a fair price. Then nothing. The customer 'went with someone else' or just went quiet. Nine times out of ten it wasn't the price. It was the quote.
A quote isn't a number. It's a small sales document, and the way you write it decides whether the customer feels confident handing you their home and their money. Here's what wins.
Send it fast
The single biggest factor is speed. The tradesperson who quotes within a few hours beats the one who quotes in three days, even at a higher price. Fast feels organised, and organised feels trustworthy. If you can quote on site before you leave, do it.
Itemise it
A single lump sum makes people nervous. They can't see what they're paying for, so they assume the worst. Break it down: labour, materials, any disposal or call-out, and the total. The customer doesn't need every nut and bolt, but they do need to see that the number is built from real things.
- Labour for the work, described in plain terms.
- Materials, as a line or a short list.
- Anything extra (disposal, access equipment, parking).
- A clear total, with tax shown.
Describe the outcome, not just the task
Instead of 'replace tap', write 'remove the old leaking tap, fit the new mixer you chose, test for leaks and clean up'. Same job, but now the customer can picture it done. People buy the result, not the labour.
Make it easy to say yes
Tell them exactly what happens next. 'Reply yes and I'll book you in for Thursday.' One clear action beats a quote that just sits there waiting for the customer to figure out the next move.
Look the part
A tidy, professional-looking quote with your name on it beats a number typed into a text message. It signals that you take the work seriously, which makes the customer believe you'll take their job seriously too. This is worth more than people think. It's often the deciding factor between you and the other quote.
JobPlumb quotes are itemised, branded and sent as a clean link or PDF in a couple of taps. The customer can accept with one click, and it turns straight into a scheduled job and then an invoice, no retyping.
Start freeFollow up once
If you don't hear back in a few days, send one friendly nudge: 'Just checking you got my quote, happy to answer any questions.' Not pushy, just present. A surprising number of jobs are won on the follow-up, because the customer simply forgot.
The takeaway
Quote fast, itemise it, describe the result, make the next step obvious, and make it look professional. Do that and you'll win more jobs at the same price, because you've made the easy choice the obvious one.
